Cooper's take

Auto repair is a business where standard GL and a BOP are genuinely insufficient. The garage liability and garage keeper's forms exist specifically for automotive businesses because the risks are different from a typical service business. Customers' vehicles in your care are the primary asset at risk, garage keeper's liability covers them. The professional work you do on those vehicles, and the liability if your work causes an accident, is covered under the garage liability form in ways that standard GL does not address. Getting this wrong means the claims your business is most likely to face may not be covered.

Frequently asked questions

What insurance does an NC auto repair shop need?

Core coverages include: garage liability (a specialty commercial liability form for automotive businesses, covering both premises and completed operations for auto repair); garage keeper's liability (covering customers' vehicles in your care, custody, and control); commercial property (building, equipment, tools); and workers comp for employees. Standard GL and a BOP are not the right structure for an auto repair shop.

What is garage liability insurance?

Garage liability is a specialty commercial liability policy designed for auto dealers, repair shops, and automotive service businesses. It covers bodily injury and property damage arising from both your premises operations and your completed operations (work done on customers' vehicles that later causes an accident). It is not the same as standard commercial GL.

What is garage keeper's liability for auto repair shops?

Garage keeper's liability covers damage to customers' vehicles while they are in your care, in your shop, on your lot, or being test-driven. If a customer's car is damaged by fire, theft, or an employee accident while at your shop, garage keeper's liability responds. The limit should reflect the maximum value of vehicles you typically have on hand.

Does workers comp cover NC auto shop employees?

Yes. Workers comp is required for NC employers with 3 or more employees and covers auto shop workers for injuries on the job, chemical exposure, equipment injuries, falls, and other workplace accidents. The auto repair classification carries moderate workers comp rates.
