I'm Cooper Parsons, a licensed independent insurance agent in Wake Forest, NC (License #19272643). I actively place auto insurance with every carrier on this list. My income comes from placing the right policy for each client, not from steering anyone toward a particular company. These rankings are based on real quoting, real claims experience, and what I've learned writing auto coverage for Triangle-area drivers. Liberty Mutual is my personal favorite, I'll tell you exactly why below.

Detailed breakdown: Each carrier

#1

Liberty Mutual

Top PickAM Best: A (Excellent)

Best overall, strongest discounts, broadest coverage options

Liberty Mutual earns the top spot for NC auto insurance because of what it delivers across the board: a market-leading discount stack, a genuine breadth of coverage options, and a claims experience that has consistently improved. Liberty Mutual's RightTrack telematics program is one of the best in the market, new policyholders can save up to 30% in the first term simply by letting the app monitor driving for 90 days. For NC drivers who qualify for multiple discounts, Liberty Mutual often comes out the overall winner.

Strengths

  • RightTrack telematics: up to 30% discount for safe driving, best in class
  • New car replacement: pays for a brand-new car if yours is totaled within the first year
  • Better car replacement: replaces with a car one model year newer, one fewer mile
  • Lifetime repair guarantee on repairs made through their network
  • Accident forgiveness built into some policies
  • Multi-policy discount when bundling with home
  • One of the broadest discount catalogs in personal auto

Weaknesses

  • Base rates (pre-discount) can be higher than competitors
  • Telematics savings require opt-in and monitoring period

Ideal for

Drivers who want the best overall package, especially those open to telematics and who bundle home + auto.

Cooper's take

Liberty Mutual is my personal favorite auto carrier and usually the first comparison I run for clients. The RightTrack program alone changes the calculus for good drivers, 30% in year one is real money. And the new car replacement coverage is something I wish every carrier offered.

#2

Progressive

Best for Non-StandardAM Best: A+ (Superior)

Best for non-standard risks and specialty vehicles

Progressive wrote the playbook on insuring drivers that other carriers won't touch, SR-22 requirements, DUI history, new teen drivers, high-performance vehicles, commercial-use cars, and rideshare coverage. Their Name Your Price tool and comparison engine (Snapshot) give drivers genuine pricing flexibility. For anyone who's been declined elsewhere or who owns something most carriers won't cover, Progressive is almost always in the conversation.

Strengths

  • Accepts nearly any driver profile, SR-22, DUI, young drivers
  • Snapshot telematics: up to 30% discount based on actual driving
  • Rideshare coverage add-on for Uber/Lyft/DoorDash drivers
  • Name Your Price tool: start with your budget, see what coverage fits
  • Excellent app and digital self-service
  • Commercial use and specialty vehicle coverage
  • Competitive on motorcycles, RVs, boats (multi-vehicle bundles)

Weaknesses

  • Rates can creep up significantly after the first term for non-Snapshot drivers
  • Claims service rated slightly below top-tier carriers

Ideal for

Drivers with less-than-perfect records, rideshare drivers, owners of specialty vehicles, or those who want pricing transparency.

Cooper's take

Progressive is the carrier that opens doors others close. When a client has an SR-22 or a teen driver on the policy, I'm running Progressive. Their Snapshot program is also a genuine deal for conscientious drivers, and I always ask clients doing rideshare, because most personal auto policies don't cover it.

#3

Travelers

Best for Clean RecordsAM Best: A++ (Superior)

Best for clean-record drivers seeking comprehensive coverage

Travelers brings their signature financial strength and coverage quality to the auto side. For NC drivers with clean records and newer vehicles, Travelers offers highly competitive rates with a policy structure that doesn't surprise you at claim time. Their IntelliDrive telematics program and umbrella bundling make Travelers a strong choice for anyone building a comprehensive insurance portfolio.

Strengths

  • A++ AM Best rating, the highest possible
  • IntelliDrive telematics: up to 30% discount
  • Premier new vehicle replacement option
  • Excellent for multi-policy (home + auto + umbrella) bundling
  • Responsible payer discount for clean records
  • Gap insurance option for financed vehicles

Weaknesses

  • Less competitive for drivers with multiple violations or claims
  • Not as flexible as Progressive for non-standard risks

Ideal for

Drivers with 3+ years of clean driving history who want a financially bulletproof carrier for a comprehensive policy.

Cooper's take

When someone has a clean record and wants a carrier they'll never have to worry about, Travelers is a natural fit. The A++ financial strength rating matters more than people realize, you want to know your carrier will be there when you need them.

#4

Nationwide

Best BundleAM Best: A+ (Superior)

Best for multi-policy bundling

Nationwide's auto product shines brightest as part of a multi-policy relationship. Their SmartRide telematics program delivers up to 40% discount for safe drivers, the highest cap in the market, and their bundling with home insurance consistently produces some of the best combined rates in NC. For homeowners who want to streamline their insurance with one carrier, Nationwide is a compelling option.

Strengths

  • SmartRide telematics: up to 40% discount cap, industry high
  • Strong home + auto bundle pricing
  • Accident forgiveness after 5 years claim-free
  • Vanishing deductible: deductible decreases $100/year for each claims-free year
  • New vehicle replacement on totaled cars less than 3 years old

Weaknesses

  • Auto-only rates less competitive without bundle
  • Claims service varies by region

Ideal for

NC homeowners who want home and auto with one carrier and are willing to do telematics for the top-tier discount.

Cooper's take

The SmartRide 40% cap is legitimately the highest in the industry, and it's real, I've seen clients cut their auto premium nearly in half in year one. If you're insuring home and auto and you're a safe driver, Nationwide deserves a serious look.

#5

The Hartford

Best for 50+AM Best: A+ (Superior)

Best for drivers 50+ (AARP program)

The Hartford's AARP Auto Insurance Program is designed specifically for drivers 50 and older, and it shows. Lifetime renewability (they can't drop you for accidents once enrolled, with limitations), RecoverCare benefit (covers home services if you're injured in an accident), and competitive pricing for mature drivers make The Hartford a standout for older NC drivers. Pair with their AARP home product for bundled savings.

Strengths

  • AARP Auto Insurance Program, tailored for 50+ drivers
  • Lifetime renewability: policy can't be non-renewed due to at-fault accidents (with conditions)
  • RecoverCare: pays for services like transportation, cleaning, meals after a covered accident
  • 12-month rate guarantee, no surprise mid-term increases
  • Disappearing deductible option
  • Strong home + auto bundle for AARP members

Weaknesses

  • Must be AARP member to access the program (though membership is inexpensive)
  • Less competitive for drivers under 50

Ideal for

Drivers 50+ who are AARP members and want carrier loyalty that protects them from policy non-renewal after an at-fault accident.

Cooper's take

The lifetime renewability provision is something most people don't know exists, and for older clients it's enormously valuable. Getting dropped after an at-fault accident at 72 is a real thing that happens. The Hartford builds the protection against that scenario right into the program.

#6

National General

Best for SR-22AM Best: A- (Excellent)

Best for SR-22 and high-risk drivers

National General (acquired by Allstate) built their business on accepting the drivers standard carriers won't. DUI, SR-22, suspended license history, multiple accidents, National General has a product for all of it. While they're not the most feature-rich carrier, they're often the most accessible option for NC drivers who've been declined or non-renewed elsewhere, and their pricing for the risk profile is often competitive.

Strengths

  • Accepts SR-22, DUI, and high-risk profiles
  • Competitive pricing for non-standard risks
  • Strong presence in NC, familiar with state requirements
  • Non-owner SR-22 policies available
  • Direct billing and flexible payment schedules

Weaknesses

  • Not competitive for preferred (clean-record) drivers
  • Coverage options less robust than top-tier carriers

Ideal for

NC drivers with SR-22 requirements, recent DUI, suspended license history, or multiple violations who've been declined by standard carriers.

Cooper's take

National General is the resource I turn to when a client comes to me frustrated that nobody will cover them. It's not the cheapest option for clean records, but when someone needs an SR-22 and needs it this week, National General gets it done.

#7

Hagerty

Best for ClassicsAM Best: A (Excellent)

Best for classic cars, collectibles, and exotics

If you own a classic car, collector vehicle, or exotic, Hagerty is almost certainly the right answer. Standard auto policies value vehicles based on depreciated ACV, Hagerty uses agreed value, which means you and Hagerty agree upfront on exactly what the car is worth, and that's what you get paid if it's totaled. No negotiations, no depreciation, no surprises. For a 1969 Camaro or a Porsche 911 GT3, that difference can be $80,000+.

Strengths

  • Agreed value coverage, no depreciation, ever
  • Specialist in classic, collector, vintage, and exotic vehicles
  • Events and track day coverage available
  • Spare parts coverage included
  • Flexible usage, pleasure driving, shows, occasional use
  • Hagerty Drivers Club membership perks available

Weaknesses

  • Daily driver or high-mileage use typically doesn't qualify
  • Storage and usage restrictions apply

Ideal for

Owners of classic cars, collector vehicles, vintage trucks, kit cars, and exotics, any vehicle where standard ACV coverage would undervalue the asset.

Cooper's take

Anyone insuring a collectible car on a standard auto policy is leaving themselves exposed. The ACV after depreciation on a 30-year-old vehicle is often a small fraction of its actual market value. Hagerty fixes that problem completely, and the pricing is very reasonable for the protection you're getting.

Why you can't just pick the "best" carrier

Auto insurance pricing is intensely personal. Age, driving record, credit score, vehicle, ZIP code, annual mileage, how you use the vehicle, all of these feed into carrier-specific pricing algorithms that produce wildly different outputs. The carrier that's cheapest for your neighbor may be 40% more expensive for you. This is why independent agents exist: we run your profile through every carrier at once and tell you which one wins. One conversation, every option on the table.

Frequently asked questions

Who has the cheapest car insurance in North Carolina?

The cheapest auto insurer for your situation depends on your driver profile. Liberty Mutual and Progressive are frequently competitive for a wide range of NC drivers. For clean-record drivers with telematics opt-in, Liberty Mutual's RightTrack or Nationwide's SmartRide can drop rates substantially. For high-risk drivers, National General or Progressive often beat the market. The best approach is to have an independent agent run your profile against multiple carriers simultaneously.

What is the minimum car insurance required in North Carolina?

NC requires: $30,000 bodily injury per person, $100,000 per accident, and $25,000 property damage (50/100/50). NC also requires uninsured motorist coverage matching your liability limits. However, these minimums are widely considered inadequate for real-world accidents, a serious injury accident can easily exceed $60,000. Most independent agents recommend at least 100/300/100 liability limits, especially if you have assets to protect.

Does North Carolina have high car insurance rates?

NC auto insurance rates are generally in the middle range nationally, lower than states like Florida, Michigan, and California, but not as cheap as some Midwest states. Within NC, urban drivers (Charlotte, Raleigh) typically pay more than rural areas. Wake County (Wake Forest, Cary, Apex) tends to have moderate rates with full carrier competition, making it a favorable market for comparison shopping.

Should I get full coverage or liability only in NC?

If your vehicle is worth more than $4,000–$5,000 and you couldn't easily replace it out of pocket, full coverage (comprehensive + collision) is worth carrying. The standard rule: if your annual comprehensive + collision premium exceeds 10% of the vehicle's value, dropping to liability-only makes mathematical sense. An independent agent can run this analysis for your specific vehicle.

Does car insurance cover rideshare driving in NC?

Standard personal auto policies typically exclude coverage during rideshare or delivery driving (Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, Instacart). You need either a rideshare endorsement on your personal policy or a commercial auto policy that covers app-based driving. Progressive and several other carriers offer rideshare-specific coverage. Always disclose rideshare use to your agent, coverage gaps during commercial use are one of the most common claim denials we see.
