Should you file an insurance claim or pay out of pocket?

Every claim you file goes onto your claims record and can affect your renewal rate. Some incidents - a small fender bender, a minor windshield chip, a small amount of water damage - can trigger a rate increase that costs more over the next few renewal cycles than the claim was worth.

The Math to Run Before Filing

Take the claim amount, subtract your deductible, and estimate the premium increase the claim will trigger over the next three to five years. If the net claim payout is smaller than the accumulated rate increase, paying out of pocket preserves your claims record and may cost you less overall.

When Filing Makes Sense

  • The damage is significant (well above your deductible)
  • It's a type of claim that isn't heavily surcharged (comprehensive claims are often treated more favorably than at-fault collision)
  • You have claims forgiveness on your policy

When Paying Out of Pocket Makes Sense

  • The damage is only slightly above your deductible
  • You've filed another claim recently
  • You're already in a high-rate tier
  • The incident was minor enough you're not sure it will even make the deductible

If you're unsure, call your agent before filing - not to open a claim, but to ask hypothetically how a claim of that type and amount would affect your rate at renewal. That conversation doesn't obligate you to file. The NC Department of Insurance also handles disputes between North Carolina policyholders and insurers if a claim is handled unfairly. Visit our claims page for more guidance on the process for Wake Forest and North Carolina policyholders.
