What pet insurance doesn't cover, and how to plan around the gaps

Pet insurance pays a lot, but not everything. Knowing the common exclusions helps you plan your pet's care budget realistically.

What's Always Excluded

  • Pre-existing conditions: any condition treated or noted in vet records before enrollment date
  • Preventive and routine care: vaccines, annual exams, flea/tick prevention, dental cleanings, spay/neuter (unless you add a wellness rider)
  • Elective or experimental treatments
  • Breeding costs, pregnancy, and whelping care

Watch the Annual and Per-Condition Limits

Most policies have annual or per-condition limits. A $10,000 annual limit sounds generous until a cancer diagnosis requires $15,000 in treatment across surgery, chemotherapy, and follow-up care. Review the limits carefully when selecting a plan rather than just comparing monthly premiums.

The American Veterinary Medical Association offers a guide for comparing pet insurance policy terms and exclusions. Explore pet insurance options with IronHaven in Wake Forest, North Carolina.
