Do college students need renters insurance?

Many homeowners policies extend limited personal property coverage to college students living in campus dormitories - typically up to 10% of the policy's personal property limit. If a parent's home policy has $100,000 in personal property coverage, the student's dorm belongings may be covered up to $10,000.

When That Coverage Stops

That extension typically stops when the student moves off-campus to an apartment. At that point, the student is a separate household and the parent's policy doesn't follow them.

What's Actually at Risk

A student with a laptop, a few hundred dollars in textbooks, furniture, gaming equipment, and clothing can easily have $5,000-10,000 in belongings at risk. Renters insurance for students typically runs $10-20 per month - often less than a streaming subscription.

The Liability Coverage Is Just as Important

The liability protection in a renters policy is as important as the property coverage. If a student accidentally causes a fire that damages the building or a neighbor's unit, personal liability coverage responds. Without it, the student and potentially the family can be personally liable.

Before paying for a standalone student renters policy, check with your agent whether the current homeowners policy already provides dorm coverage. Then confirm when that ends, and plan accordingly for the off-campus transition. The NC Department of Insurance recommends that off-campus college students in North Carolina carry their own renters insurance policy.
