Church property
Building, contents, stained glass, pipe organs, sound equipment, and specialty architectural elements. Replacement cost must reflect actual restoration cost for historic and specialty-built structures.
General liability
Covers congregant injuries on premises, event liability, and third-party property damage. The foundation of any church policy.
Abuse and molestation
Covers claims of sexual abuse or molestation by church staff or volunteers. Typically excluded from standard GL. Non-negotiable for any ministry with children's programs.
Directors and officers (D&O)
Protects elders, deacons, and leadership from personal liability for decisions made in governance roles.
Commercial auto
Covers church vans, buses, and vehicles used for ministry purposes. Personal auto policies do not cover these uses.
Workers' compensation
Required in NC for churches with 3 or more paid employees. Covers pastoral staff, administrators, and other paid workers.
Employment practices liability (EPLI)
Covers discrimination, harassment, and wrongful termination claims from non-ministerial staff. Important for congregations with larger paid staff.
Abuse and molestation: the most critical coverage
Abuse and molestation coverage is excluded from standard general liability policies. It must be specifically added to a church policy, and it is not optional for any NC ministry that works with children, youth, or vulnerable adults. One claim can bankrupt a congregation. The coverage is available and the premium is manageable. Not having it is not a responsible choice for any church with youth programs.
Good screening and background check programs reduce risk but do not eliminate liability. Insurance is the safety net when prevention fails.
Historic NC churches: property valuation matters
Many North Carolina churches occupy historic buildings with plaster ceilings, original woodwork, stained glass, and specialty craftsmanship that cannot be replicated at generic construction cost. If a fire damages a historic sanctuary, rebuilding to its original condition requires specialty contractors and materials at a cost that far exceeds generic square-footage replacement estimates. Church property policies must be structured with accurate replacement cost values that account for these specialty elements.
Cooper's take
The two things I check first with every NC church I work with: abuse and molestation coverage, and whether the building limit reflects actual replacement cost. These are the two most common and most consequential gaps I find. Abuse and molestation is the one that keeps me up at night on behalf of clients who don't have it. The liability exposure is enormous, and the coverage is not expensive relative to that risk.

Frequently asked questions
What insurance does a NC church need?
A North Carolina church typically needs church property insurance (building, contents, specialty items like stained glass, pipe organs, and sound equipment), general liability, directors and officers (D&O), abuse and molestation coverage (mandatory for any ministry with children's programs), commercial auto for church vans and buses, workers' compensation for paid staff, and employment practices liability (EPLI) for larger congregations.
Why do NC churches need abuse and molestation coverage?
Abuse and molestation coverage is the most important and most commonly overlooked coverage for churches with children's programs. It is typically excluded from standard general liability policies and must be specifically added. One claim can bankrupt a congregation without it. Any ministry that works with children, youth, or vulnerable adults should carry this coverage. It is non-negotiable.
How is church property insurance different from standard commercial property?
Church property has specialized valuation needs. Stained glass, pipe organs, historic woodwork, and custom architectural elements cannot be replaced at standard construction cost. Church property policies are specifically designed to cover these items at proper replacement cost. A standard commercial property policy may significantly underinsure a historic or specialty-built church building.
Do NC church board members need D&O coverage?
Yes. Elders, deacons, and church leadership who serve in governance roles can be personally sued for decisions made in those capacities. Directors and officers coverage protects them. Without D&O, church leaders bear personal financial risk for organizational decisions. This is especially important for churches with employed staff or significant financial operations.
Do NC churches need EPLI?
Yes, especially for churches with paid staff. Employment practices liability insurance (EPLI) covers discrimination, harassment, and wrongful termination claims. While churches have some employment exemptions under Title VII for ministerial roles, they still face employment claims from non-ministerial staff. EPLI is important for any congregation with more than a few paid employees.
