Insurance priorities after job loss

Health insurance, immediate

This is the most time-sensitive item. You have 60 days from the date your employer coverage ends to elect COBRA or enroll in an ACA marketplace plan. Compare costs carefully, for many families, a marketplace plan is significantly less expensive than COBRA.

Life insurance conversion, 30-day window

Most employer group life policies include a conversion right: you can convert to an individual policy within 30 days of termination without medical underwriting. If you have any health conditions, do not miss this window.

Disability insurance

Employer group disability coverage ends with the job. If your new situation includes a gap before you start a new position, you have no income protection. Individual disability policies are available, though underwriting applies.

Auto insurance

Do not cancel coverage entirely. If budget is tight, reducing to liability-only on an older vehicle with no loan may be reasonable. Do not drop UM/UIM, NC has a meaningful uninsured driver rate.

Home insurance

Do not let it lapse. If you have a mortgage, your lender will force-place insurance, which costs more, covers less, and is difficult to undo. Contact your insurer about payment options before a payment is missed.

COBRA vs. ACA marketplace

COBRA keeps your existing coverage exactly, same doctors, same network, same deductibles. The tradeoff is cost: you pay the full premium (employer share plus employee share) plus a 2% administrative fee, often $1,200 to $2,000 or more per month for a family. ACA marketplace plans frequently cost less, especially when income is reduced post-job-loss (which may qualify you for premium subsidies). Job loss is a qualifying life event, giving you a 60-day special enrollment window. An independent agent can compare both options at no cost.

Force-placed insurance: what it is and why to avoid it

If your home insurance lapses and you have a mortgage, your lender will purchase a policy on your behalf and charge you for it. Force-placed insurance protects the lender's interest in the structure only. It does not cover your personal belongings, does not provide liability coverage, and typically costs more than a standard homeowner policy. Once force-placed, it is administratively difficult to remove even after you secure your own coverage. Keep your home policy active.

Cooper's take

Job loss is stressful, and the insurance decisions made in the first 30 days matter a lot. Prioritize health coverage first, it is the most time-sensitive and the most expensive gap to leave open. Then make sure home and auto stay active. The life insurance conversion window is one most people do not know exists, if you have any health history, do not miss it.

Frequently asked questions

Is job loss a qualifying life event for ACA marketplace insurance in NC?

Yes. Losing employer-sponsored health coverage due to job loss is a qualifying life event that opens a 60-day special enrollment period for an ACA marketplace plan. You do not have to wait for open enrollment. NC residents can shop plans at healthcare.gov or through a licensed agent who can compare options at no cost to you.

How much does COBRA cost in NC after losing a job?

COBRA premiums are the full cost of the employer plan, the portion you paid plus the portion your employer paid, plus a 2% administrative fee. For a family plan, this commonly runs $1,200 to $2,000 per month or more. COBRA keeps the same network and coverage, which matters if you have ongoing care. But for many people, an ACA marketplace plan is significantly less expensive, especially if income is reduced after job loss.

What happens to my employer group life insurance when I lose my job?

Employer group life insurance typically ends when your employment ends. However, most group policies include a conversion right, you can convert the group coverage to an individual policy within 30 to 31 days of termination without underwriting. This matters most if you have health conditions that would affect your insurability on the open market. Miss the window and you lose the option.

Should I drop auto coverage to save money after job loss?

Dropping to liability-only on an older vehicle with no loan may be appropriate. But do not drop uninsured motorist and underinsured motorist coverage. North Carolina has a meaningful rate of uninsured drivers, and UM/UIM coverage protects you when the at-fault driver has no insurance or not enough. This coverage is inexpensive relative to the protection it provides.

What happens to my home insurance if I cannot afford to pay the premium?

Do not let home insurance lapse. If you have a mortgage, your lender will force-place insurance if you allow the policy to cancel. Force-placed insurance is more expensive than a standard homeowner policy, covers only the lender's interest (not your belongings or liability), and can be difficult to remove. Contact your insurer about payment options or a payment plan before missing a payment.
