A new baby is the most common trigger for buying life insurance, and the most important time to have it. Here is what to review and update when you are expecting or just had a child.

Life insurance
If you do not have it, get it now. If you have it, review whether the amount is still enough. A new child typically adds $250,000 to $500,000 of need for income replacement and education funding. Review beneficiary designations and consider a trust if naming a minor.
Add baby to health insurance
You have 30 days from birth to add your newborn to an employer health plan without waiting for open enrollment. This window closes fast. Do not miss it.
Disability insurance
With a new dependent, protecting your income matters more than ever. Short-term disability may cover maternity leave; long-term disability covers extended inability to work. Both deserve a look.
Home insurance liability
Review your personal liability limit. If a child visiting your home is injured, your homeowner's liability coverage responds. Consider increasing limits or adding an umbrella policy.
Auto insurance liability
A child injured in an accident involving your vehicle can generate significant claims. Review your liability and uninsured motorist limits to make sure they are adequate.
Will and guardian designation
Not insurance, but directly adjacent. Without a will naming a guardian, the state decides who raises your child if both parents die. This should be done before or shortly after the birth.
The 30-day health insurance window
Under federal law, the birth of a child is a qualifying life event that opens a special enrollment period for employer-sponsored health plans. You have 30 days from the date of birth to enroll the baby. After 30 days, you will need to wait for open enrollment. A newborn without health insurance coverage faces significant financial exposure from day one. Contact your HR department or health insurance carrier immediately after the birth.
Naming a minor as life insurance beneficiary
Insurance companies cannot pay a death benefit directly to a minor. If your child is named as primary beneficiary and you die before they turn 18, a court must appoint a guardian of the estate to manage the funds. This process takes time and money. The alternative is to establish a revocable living trust, name the trust as beneficiary, and designate a trustee to manage funds for your child according to your instructions. An estate attorney can set this up; a life insurance agent cannot draft legal documents but can help you structure the beneficiary designation correctly.
Cooper's take
The first question I ask when I hear someone is expecting is whether they have life insurance. The answer is still no more often than it should be. A young, healthy parent can get a 20-year term policy for less than the cost of a streaming subscription. Get it before the baby arrives if you can, you never know how a pregnancy will affect your health classification at underwriting.

Frequently asked questions
How long do I have to add my newborn to health insurance in NC?
You have 30 days from the date of birth to add your newborn to an employer-sponsored health plan without waiting for open enrollment. This is a qualifying life event under federal law. Miss the 30-day window and you will need to wait until the next open enrollment period, leaving your baby without coverage in the meantime.
How much life insurance do I need with a new baby?
A general guideline is $250,000 to $500,000 per child added to your existing coverage, accounting for income replacement and future education costs. If you have no life insurance at all, a term policy in the range of 10 to 15 times your annual income is a starting point. The right amount depends on your income, debts, and how long your family would need income replacement.
Can I name my newborn as a life insurance beneficiary?
You can name a minor child as a contingent beneficiary, but there is a complication: insurance companies cannot pay death benefits directly to a minor. The court would appoint a guardian of the estate to manage the funds, which adds legal cost and delay. A better approach is to name a trust as beneficiary, with the child as the trust beneficiary, so proceeds are managed on the child's behalf according to your wishes.
Does my home insurance need to change when I have a baby?
The policy itself does not need to change, but review your personal liability limit. If a neighborhood child visits and is injured at your home, your liability coverage responds. A standard $100,000 liability limit may not be enough, consider $300,000 or higher, or add an umbrella policy.
What is disability insurance and why does it matter after having a baby?
Disability insurance replaces a portion of your income if you are unable to work due to illness or injury. With a new dependent, your income is more critical than ever. Many employers offer short-term disability, but long-term disability coverage, which can replace income for years or until retirement, is often underfunded or absent. Individual policies are available through a licensed agent.
