Cooper's take

Long-term care is one of the largest uninsured financial risks for NC retirees. Medicare covers very limited skilled nursing care. Health insurance covers treatment, not custodial care.

If you need help with daily activities, bathing, dressing, eating, for an extended period, either in a facility or at home, you're paying out of pocket unless you have long-term care insurance or Medicaid (which requires spending down assets). This is a planning conversation I encourage people to have before they're 65, when underwriting is still accessible.

Frequently asked questions

What is long-term care insurance in NC?

Long-term care (LTC) insurance covers the cost of assistance with daily living activities when you can no longer perform them independently due to age, illness, or disability. It covers care in nursing facilities, assisted living, and in-home care, services that health insurance and Medicare do not cover for extended periods.

Does Medicare cover long-term care in NC?

Only in limited circumstances. Medicare covers short-term skilled nursing facility care after a qualifying hospital stay and limited home health care. It does not cover custodial care (help with daily activities) for extended periods. Most long-term care needs are not Medicare-covered.

When should NC residents buy long-term care insurance?

Ideally in your 50s to early 60s, when premiums are lower and underwriting is more accessible. Waiting until health issues arise often means higher premiums or denial of coverage. Most advisors suggest having the conversation well before retirement.

What is a hybrid long-term care policy in NC?

Hybrid policies combine life insurance or an annuity with a long-term care benefit. If you need care, the policy pays for it. If you don't use the long-term care benefit, a death benefit goes to your heirs. Hybrid policies address the concern that traditional LTC premiums may be paid for years without benefit if care is never needed.
