American Modern's roots go back to 1938 in Cincinnati, starting as an auto financing company before discovering, in 1949, that mobile home owners had almost no insurance options. That discovery led to a pivot into specialty insurance that has defined the company ever since. American Modern Insurance Group is now a Munich Re subsidiary writing specialty coverage across nearly every category of non-standard risk.

The Midland Discount Corporation was founded in Cincinnati, Ohio as an automobile financing company.
1949
Identified the mobile home financing and insurance gap, becoming one of the first companies to specialize in mobile home coverage in the United States.
1965
Formally established American Modern Home Insurance Company, consolidating its specialty insurance operations.
1996
Acquired by Munich Re, one of the world's largest reinsurers, providing significant financial backing and global reach.
2010s
Expanded specialty product line to include vacant property, seasonal homes, watercraft, snowmobiles, motorcycles, and collector vehicles.
2024
Operates as a leading specialty insurer writing coverage in markets where standard carriers consistently decline.
