History
1920
Founded as a specialty auto insurer focused on non-standard risk, offering coverage to drivers that other companies declined or overpriced.
1939
General Motors established GMAC Insurance as a way for GM customers to bundle auto financing and insurance in one place.
2012
GMAC Insurance was acquired and reorganized, preparing for a complete rebrand into a standalone national carrier.
2013
Officially rebranded as National General Insurance on July 1st, establishing an independent identity separate from General Motors.
2020
Allstate announced a $4 billion acquisition of National General, one of the largest insurance deals in recent years.
2021
Completed integration into the Allstate family of companies while retaining the National General brand and market focus.
