Nationwide
Born from a single idea: insurance should be fair.
Overview
Nationwide was founded on a principle that sounds obvious today but was revolutionary in 1926, that rural farmers shouldn't pay the same auto insurance rates as city drivers just because that was easier for the insurer. That founding commitment to fairness and value has guided everything since.
History
1926
The Ohio Farm Bureau founded Farm Bureau Mutual on April 14th to offer fair auto insurance rates to farmers, who had fewer accidents than urban drivers but paid the same rates.
1928
Expanded beyond Ohio into West Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina, beginning what would become a truly national company.
1934
Added fire insurance and expanded coverage to residents of larger cities, not just rural farm communities.
1955
Changed its name to Nationwide Insurance, reflecting the company's growth across the United States.
1998
Became one of the first major insurers to offer online coverage options, embracing digital accessibility before it was the norm.
2025
Ranked No. 72 on the Fortune 500 with approximately 24,000 employees and operations across all 50 states.
