Overview

State Auto Insurance was founded in Columbus, Ohio in 1921 by Robert 'Bob' Pein with $30,000 of borrowed money and three employees. He wanted to create a casualty insurance company rooted in the Midwest that would serve people with honesty and consistency. More than 100 years later, State Auto is now a Liberty Mutual subsidiary that writes personal and commercial coverage across the eastern United States.

History

1921

Robert Pein founded the State Automobile Mutual Insurance Company on September 16th in Columbus, Ohio, the first casualty insurance company ever headquartered in Columbus.

1930s

Survived the Great Depression and grew its policyholder base by maintaining competitive rates and honoring every claim during difficult economic times.

1950s

Expanded beyond Ohio into neighboring states, becoming a regional carrier across the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic.

1991

State Auto Financial Corporation was formed as the holding company, allowing for public investment and accelerated expansion.

2022

Acquired by Liberty Mutual, bringing State Auto into one of the world's largest insurance organizations while maintaining the brand in the marketplace.
