History
1853
The St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Company was established, eventually merging with Travelers to form today's company.
1864
James G. Batterson chartered The Travelers Insurance Company in Hartford, Connecticut, inspired by the accident insurance products he saw while traveling in England.
1864
Issued the first accident insurance policy in the United States when banker James Bolter paid two cents to be covered for a four-block walk home.
1897
Wrote the first automobile insurance policy in the United States for Gilbert Loomis of Dayton, Ohio, for $7.50.
2004
St. Paul Companies and Travelers merged to form St. Paul Travelers, creating one of the largest commercial lines insurers in the country.
2009
Joined the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the only property-casualty insurer ever included in the index.
2015
Expanded commercial lines globally, writing business in over 30 countries while maintaining its leadership position in US property and casualty.
