Umbrella insurance in North Carolina: what it covers and who needs it

A personal umbrella policy provides liability coverage above and beyond your auto and home insurance limits. Here's how it works and whether you need it.

How umbrella insurance works

Your auto policy has a $300,000 liability limit. You're in an at-fault accident with serious injuries and the other party's damages total $900,000. Your auto policy pays $300,000. Your umbrella pays the remaining $600,000 (up to the umbrella limit). Without an umbrella, that $600,000 gap comes from your personal assets.

What umbrella covers

Liability from auto accidents (excess over your auto liability)

Liability from your home (excess over your home liability)

Personal liability claims not covered by underlying policies (libel, slander, false arrest in some cases)

Rental property liability (if you have a landlord policy)

Watercraft liability (if you have a boat policy)

What umbrella does not cover

Your own injuries or property damage

Intentional acts

Business-related liability (need a commercial umbrella)

Professional errors (need E&O or malpractice coverage)

How much umbrella coverage do you need?

$1M is the standard starting point. Consider $2M to $5M if you have:

Significant assets, home equity, retirement accounts, investment accounts, that could be targeted in a judgment

A teen driver on your policy

A swimming pool or trampoline

Dogs

Rental property

A high-visibility profession

Cost

A $1M umbrella typically costs $150 to $300/year in NC. A $2M policy may add another $75 to $150. Remarkably affordable for the protection level, roughly $15 to $25 per month.

Underlying policy requirements

Umbrella carriers require minimum underlying limits on your auto and home before the umbrella attaches. Typically $300,000 to $500,000 auto liability, $300,000 home liability. You may need to increase underlying limits when adding an umbrella, factor this into the total cost comparison.

Cooper's take

Umbrella insurance is the most underutilized policy in personal lines. For $15 to $25/month, you get an extra $1M to $2M of protection. The people who most need it often don't have it, and the people who have it rarely need to use it, which is exactly the point.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between umbrella and excess liability?

They're often used interchangeably, but technically an umbrella provides broader coverage (drops down to cover claims the underlying policy doesn't cover), while excess liability simply adds more limit on top of the underlying. Most personal policies are true umbrellas.

Does umbrella cover my teen driver in NC?

Yes. A personal umbrella extends to all drivers covered under your underlying auto policy, including household members. Teen drivers are exactly why many families add an umbrella.

How much does a $1 million umbrella cost in NC?

Typically $150 to $300/year for a $1M policy. This can increase if you have multiple homes, vehicles, or risk factors like a pool, teen driver, or prior claims.

Do I need to change my auto or home policy limits to get an umbrella?

Usually yes. Umbrella carriers require minimum underlying limits, often $300,000 in auto liability and $300,000 in home liability. If your current limits are lower, you'd need to increase them first.
