Childcare Insurance
Childcare and daycare insurance in North Carolina
NC's DCDEE licensing requirements mandate minimum coverage levels, but the most critical coverage for childcare operations, abuse and molestation, is not included in a standard policy. It must be specifically added.

Licensed childcare centers
Commercial facilities serving multiple families. Must meet DCDEE licensing and insurance requirements.
Family childcare homes
In-home programs licensed by DCDEE. Typically serve 3-8 children. Require their own insurance separate from a homeowner's policy.
After-school programs
Programs serving school-age children before or after school hours. May operate independently or through a nonprofit.
Summer camps
Day camps and residential camps. Activity-based risks, transportation exposure, and participant accident coverage needs.
Key coverages for childcare programs
General liability
Child injury on premises or during activities. Covers medical costs and legal defense for accident claims.
Professional liability
Negligent supervision claims. A parent alleges a child was injured because staff failed to supervise adequately.
Abuse and molestation
Non-negotiable. Standard GL excludes this. One claim can close a childcare center permanently. Must be specifically added.
Commercial property
Equipment, furniture, educational materials, and the building or leasehold improvements.
Commercial auto
Required if you transport children in a vehicle owned by the center. Personal auto does not cover business transportation of clients.
Workers' comp
Required in NC for 3 or more employees. Auto repair involves significant injury risk.
Abuse and molestation, the most critical coverage
Abuse and molestation coverage is the single most important insurance for a childcare operation. Standard commercial general liability policies specifically exclude it. Without it, your facility has zero coverage for the exposure that carries the greatest financial and reputational risk.
One claim in this area can permanently close a childcare business. The coverage must be specifically requested and added, it will not appear automatically on a BOP or GL policy. Every childcare policy I place includes this coverage as a non-negotiable requirement.
Cooper's take
Childcare insurance has a few things that make it different from other small business policies. The licensing requirements from DCDEE set a floor, not a ceiling. Most well-run childcare centers need substantially more coverage than the minimums require.
Abuse and molestation coverage is the one I check first on every childcare inquiry. If a childcare center doesn't have it, that is the first thing we fix. The second thing I check is transportation, if they're moving kids anywhere, commercial auto or hired/non-owned auto needs to be in place.

Frequently asked questions
What insurance is required for NC licensed childcare programs?
The NC Division of Child Development and Early Education (DCDEE) requires licensed childcare programs to carry minimum levels of general liability insurance. Most licensing requirements also require coverage for participant accidents. Specific limits vary by program type and size. Beyond the minimums, abuse and molestation coverage and professional liability are strongly recommended.
Does standard general liability cover childcare abuse claims?
No. Standard commercial general liability policies specifically exclude abuse and molestation claims. Abuse and molestation coverage must be added as a separate endorsement or purchased as a standalone policy. Without it, a childcare center has no coverage for its most significant liability exposure.
Does childcare insurance cover transportation of children?
Only if you add commercial auto or hired/non-owned auto coverage. Personal auto policies do not cover transporting children as part of a business operation. If your center uses a van or bus, you need a commercial auto policy. If you use employee-owned vehicles for pickups or field trips, hired/non-owned auto coverage is required.
What is negligent supervision coverage for childcare centers?
Negligent supervision is a professional liability claim alleging that a child was injured because staff failed to provide adequate supervision. It is distinct from a general slip-and-fall injury. Professional liability coverage for childcare centers specifically covers these claims, which are among the most common lawsuits against childcare operations.
How much does daycare insurance cost in North Carolina?
A small licensed family childcare home in NC typically pays $1,200-$2,500/year for a package including GL, professional liability, and abuse and molestation coverage. A larger licensed childcare center with employees will typically pay $3,000-$8,000 or more depending on enrollment, payroll, vehicles, and coverage limits.
