Class A motorhome insurance in North Carolina
A diesel pusher or gas Class A is one of the largest personal vehicles on the road. The coverage needs to match.

Class A motorhomes are the largest production motorhomes available, typically 30 to 45 feet long, with slide-outs that extend the living space to 12 feet or more. They range from entry-level gas units around $80,000 to luxury diesel pushers well over $500,000.
Popular brands in NC include Tiffin Allegro, Newmar, Entegra Coach, Foretravel, Thor Palazzo, and Winnebago Adventurer. At these values and this level of complexity, standard auto-based policies frequently fall short.
Gas Class A vs diesel pusher: coverage distinctions
- ·Gas Class A: Front engine, typically Ford or Chevy chassis. Values $80K–$200K. Standard specialty RV carriers handle most placements without issue.
- ·Diesel pusher: Rear engine, Freightliner, Spartan, or similar heavy chassis. Values $200K–$800K+. Requires agreed value or replacement cost. Standard carriers often decline or underinsure these.
- ·Roadside assistance: A broken-down 45-ft diesel pusher in the mountains is not a standard roadside job. Specialty RV roadside assistance programs understand what it takes to move or repair a coach of this size.
Slide-outs and awnings
Slide-out rooms are the mechanism that most commonly fails on a Class A motorhome. A slide that won't retract, or a motor that burns out, can strand you at a campsite and cost $8,000 to $20,000 to repair. Awnings are even more common claims, a wind gust catches an extended awning and tears it completely.
Some policies include slide-out and awning coverage as a standard feature. Others require a specific endorsement. Read the exclusion language carefully, or ask your agent directly: is damage to my slide-out mechanism a covered claim under this policy?
Full-timer coverage for Class A owners
A growing number of NC Class A owners use their motorhome as a primary residence. When the coach is where you live, standard seasonal RV insurance is the wrong policy. You need:
- ·Personal liability coverage equivalent to homeowners insurance
- ·Expanded personal belongings limits for all your household contents
- ·Loss of use coverage if a claim leaves you displaced
- ·Vacation liability while parked at a campsite
Cooper's take
A $400,000 diesel pusher is not a $35,000 car. It is closer to a house on wheels, and it needs to be insured like one. I've seen Class A owners come to me after discovering their policy had an ACV valuation that would pay out $180,000 on a coach that would cost $380,000 to replace. They had no idea, the premium looked reasonable so they assumed the coverage was adequate.
For any Class A over $150,000, I start the conversation with agreed value and specialty carriers. The premium difference is real, but it is almost always worth it at claim time.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a gas Class A and a diesel pusher?
A gas Class A is built on a front-engine chassis, usually a Ford or Chevy cutaway. A diesel pusher has the engine in the rear and typically uses a Freightliner, Spartan, or similar heavy-duty chassis. Diesel pushers are generally larger (40-45 ft), cost more, and require specialty carriers for proper coverage. Gas Class A motorhomes are more commonly written through standard RV carriers.
Do I need agreed value coverage on a Class A motorhome?
For any Class A worth $100,000 or more, agreed value is strongly recommended. ACV policies apply depreciation to a vehicle that is already not liquid at retail value. A $250,000 Newmar that takes a total loss settlement at ACV may pay out far less than replacement would cost. Agreed value locks in a number both parties accept at policy inception.
What happens if a slide-out or awning is damaged on my Class A?
Slide-outs and awnings are among the most common Class A claims. A slide-out mechanism failure or wind-damaged awning can cost $5,000 to $20,000 to repair or replace. Many policies include these, but the specific language matters. Confirm that awning and slide-out damage is a covered peril under your policy, not an exclusion or a separate endorsement you have to add.
When does a Class A motorhome need full-timer coverage?
Full-timer coverage is needed when the motorhome is your primary residence rather than a seasonal or recreational vehicle. Standard RV policies are built around occasional use. When you live in the coach, you need personal liability coverage similar to homeowners insurance, expanded personal belongings limits, loss of use, and sometimes medical payments specific to the full-timer situation.
Which insurance carriers write Class A diesel pushers in NC?
National General, Progressive RV, and Foremost write many gas and diesel Class A motorhomes. For high-value diesel pushers over $300,000, specialty carriers through wholesale channels, and in some cases Lloyd's of London syndicates, handle the placements that standard markets decline. An independent agent who regularly places RV coverage can access these markets.
