Fifth wheel insurance in North Carolina
Fifth wheels are the largest non-motorized RVs and among the most popular choices for full-time living. The coverage needs to reflect what the unit is worth and how it is used.

A fifth wheel is a large towed RV that connects to a pickup truck via a kingpin hitch mounted in the truck bed. The bi-level design, with a raised front section over the truck bed, creates more living space than a traditional travel trailer of comparable length. They range from 24 to 45 feet and require a heavy-duty pickup (one-ton or larger) to tow safely.
Popular models in NC include the Keystone Montana, Grand Design Solitude, Alliance Avenue, DRV Mobile Suites, and Luxe Elite. The DRV and Luxe units represent the luxury segment of the fifth wheel market, with prices ranging from $150,000 to $250,000.
Coverage the truck policy does not provide
Fifth wheel owners frequently assume their truck covers the trailer. Here is what actually applies:
- ·Truck liability while towing: Extends to the fifth wheel for liability, bodily injury and property damage you cause to others.
- ·Physical damage to the fifth wheel: NOT covered by the truck policy. The fifth wheel needs its own comprehensive and collision coverage.
- ·Personal belongings inside the fifth wheel: NOT covered by the truck policy. Requires a personal property endorsement on the RV policy.
- ·Vacation liability at the campsite: NOT covered by the truck policy. Requires vacation liability on the RV policy.
High-value fifth wheels and agreed value
Luxury fifth wheels, DRV Mobile Suites, Luxe Elite, Alliance Avenue, occupy a different price tier than standard production units. Physical damage on a fifth wheel worth $200,000 is a significant claim, and ACV depreciation can reduce the payout substantially.
For units over $80,000, agreed value coverage locks in the insured value at the start of the policy period. If the unit is totaled, you receive the agreed value rather than a depreciated ACV figure. The premium difference is modest relative to the value of the protection at claim time.
Full-timer coverage for fifth wheel residents
Fifth wheels are the most common choice for full-time RV living after Class A motorhomes. When a fifth wheel is your primary residence, standard towed-unit insurance is inadequate. Full-timer coverage adds:
- ·Personal liability equivalent to homeowners coverage
- ·Expanded personal belongings coverage for all household contents
- ·Loss of use if a covered loss displaces you
- ·Vacation liability at every campsite where you park
Cooper's take
A $180,000 fifth wheel is a major asset. I see owners treat it like a basic camper and carry the minimum coverage because it feels like it is just a trailer. But physical damage on a luxury fifth wheel, a hailstorm at a campsite, a collision during a lane change, a fire from an electrical issue, can be a $50,000 to $80,000 claim. Agreed value at the right limit is not optional at that price point.
I also talk to a lot of full-timers who are living in fifth wheels and have never added a full-timer endorsement. They have no personal liability, no meaningful belongings coverage, and no loss of use. That gap is fixable, and it usually does not cost much to add the right endorsements.

Frequently asked questions
Does my truck's insurance cover my fifth wheel?
Your truck's liability coverage extends to the fifth wheel while it is attached and being towed. However, physical damage to the fifth wheel itself is not covered by your auto policy. The fifth wheel needs its own physical damage coverage, comprehensive and collision, to protect against weather, collision, fire, theft, and other losses.
What is the right value basis for a high-end fifth wheel?
For fifth wheels in the $80,000 or higher range, and especially for luxury units like DRV Mobile Suites or Luxe Elite that can reach $150,000 to $250,000, agreed value is the correct approach. ACV coverage applies depreciation, and a high-end fifth wheel that is several years old may see significant depreciation under ACV despite having a robust private-market value.
Is a fifth wheel the right RV for full-time living?
Fifth wheels are one of the most popular choices for full-time RV living. They provide more living space per dollar than Class A motorhomes at similar price points, and the pickup truck tow vehicle is flexible for daily use. If you live full-time in a fifth wheel, you need a full-timer endorsement on the policy, standard towed unit insurance is not designed for a primary residence.
What does physical damage cover on a fifth wheel in storage?
Comprehensive coverage applies to the fifth wheel whether it is being towed, parked at a campsite, or in storage. Fire, theft, vandalism, hail, and weather damage are all covered perils under comprehensive. If your fifth wheel is stored for six months of the year, the comprehensive coverage still protects it during that period.
What carriers write fifth wheel insurance in NC?
Progressive RV, National General, Foremost, and Good Sam write the majority of fifth wheel policies in NC. For luxury fifth wheels over $100,000, particularly DRV, Luxe, and Alliance brands, specialty markets and in some cases wholesale channels provide better-suited coverage, including agreed value at appropriate limits.
