Custom chopper and built motorcycle insurance in North Carolina
A frame-up build cannot be valued by a book. Agreed value coverage, backed by a proper appraisal, is the only approach that protects what you have built.

For insurance purposes, custom motorcycles fall into several categories:
- ·Frame-up customs: Motorcycles built from scratch on a custom-fabricated or aftermarket frame. No OEM VIN exists from a motorcycle manufacturer.
- ·Kit bikes: Built from commercially available kits with specified components and instructions. Titan, American Ironhorse, and similar platforms.
- ·Heavily modified production bikes: A production Harley or Indian that has been so extensively modified it no longer has meaningful book value. Rebuilt frames, custom tanks, extensive engine work.
- ·Board track and vintage-style replicas: Bikes built in the style of a historical period using period-correct or reproduction parts.
Why ACV is wrong for custom builds
Actual cash value settlement works by looking up the market value of a comparable vehicle and applying depreciation. For a custom motorcycle, this process fails at every step:
- ·There is no comparable vehicle to look up
- ·Depreciation tables do not apply to hand-built machines
- ·The adjuster has no framework for valuing custom fabrication work
- ·Parts costs and labor for a rebuild cannot be derived from book value
An ACV claim on a $45,000 frame-up build might pay $8,000 if the adjuster is working from a standard motorcycle database. That gap is not recoverable.
Agreed value: the correct approach
Agreed value coverage establishes the insured amount before the policy is written. If the bike is totaled, you receive that amount. No depreciation. No negotiation at claim time. No ACV lookup on a vehicle that has no ACV.
The agreed value process for a custom typically involves:
- ·A formal appraisal from a qualified motorcycle appraiser who documents the build value
- ·Photographs of the complete build
- ·Documentation of major component costs
- ·Carrier review and acceptance of the stated value
Specialty carriers for custom motorcycles
Three carriers handle the majority of custom motorcycle business in NC:
- ·Markel: Strong custom and specialty motorcycle book, agreed value available, experienced with one-off builds
- ·Grundy: Known for collector vehicles, extends to custom motorcycles, agreed value standard
- ·American Collectors: Collector and specialty vehicle focus, custom motorcycle experience
As an independent agent, Cooper has access to all three and can identify which carrier is the best fit for your specific build type and how you use the bike.
Cooper's take
Custom bike builders put an enormous amount of time, money, and craft into their machines. I have talked to people who have spent three years and $60,000 building a bike, and they have it on a standard policy for $7,500 because no one told them to do it differently. When they find out what ACV settlement would look like on a total loss, it is not a good conversation.
Get the appraisal done. It costs a few hundred dollars and makes every subsequent decision, coverage amount, carrier selection, premium, easier and more accurate. Do not skip it because the bike is still in progress. Get it done when the build is complete and update it if you make significant additions.

Frequently asked questions
Why can't a custom chopper be insured with a standard policy?
Standard motorcycle policies use ACV (actual cash value), which is derived from book value and depreciation tables. A custom-built motorcycle has no book value. There is no Kelley Blue Book entry for a frame-up build with a custom frame, donor engine, and $30,000 in fabrication and parts. ACV settlement on a custom motorcycle is essentially meaningless. Agreed value is the only correct approach.
Do I need an appraisal for custom chopper insurance?
Yes. Most specialty carriers require a formal appraisal from a qualified motorcycle appraiser before issuing agreed value coverage on a custom build. The appraisal documents the build value, component costs, and comparable market evidence. This protects both you and the carrier at claim time.
What carriers write custom chopper insurance?
Markel, Grundy, and American Collectors are the primary specialty carriers for custom and collector motorcycles in North Carolina. Each has different appetite for various build types. An independent agent can match your specific build to the carrier most suited to write it correctly.
What is a kit bike and how is it insured?
A kit bike is a motorcycle built from a commercially available kit, typically with a pre-engineered frame, purchased donor engine, and specified component list. Kit bikes can often be registered and insured as motorcycles once they pass state inspection. Coverage should still be agreed value since ACV is not reliable for kit-built machines.
Can I get liability-only coverage on a custom chopper?
Yes. Liability coverage is available for registered custom motorcycles regardless of build type. If you are willing to self-insure the physical bike and only want liability protection against damage you cause to others, liability-only coverage is an option. Most custom builders with significant investment in the machine want agreed value physical damage coverage as well.
