NC Harley riders span the full lineup. Common models include:
- ·Sportster family: Iron 883, Forty-Eight, Nightster, entry and mid-range cruisers
- ·Softail family: Fat Boy, Breakout, Low Rider S, Heritage Classic, the core cruiser platform
- ·Touring family: Road King, Road Glide, Street Glide, Ultra Limited, CVO, flagship models with the highest insurance exposure
- ·Adventure: Pan America 1250, Harley's ADV entry, growing NC ridership
Custom parts and equipment coverage
CP&E coverage is the most commonly underinsured area on Harley policies. The average Harley owner spends $3,000 to $20,000 on aftermarket parts over the life of the bike. Common modifications include:
- ·Exhaust systems (Vance & Hines, Rinehart, Bassani)
- ·Stage 1-4 engine upgrades
- ·Custom seats and passenger seating
- ·Audio and infotainment upgrades
- ·Custom paint and chrome
- ·Lighting and electrical accessories
Standard policies default to $3,000 in CP&E limits. If your total modifications exceed that, you need a higher limit or a specialty policy that accounts for the full build value.
Theft risk and comprehensive coverage
Street Glides and Road Glides are among the most stolen motorcycles in the country. They are high-value, recognizable, and have strong resale value for parts. Comprehensive coverage is not optional for a touring Harley, it is essential.
Anti-theft devices (GPS trackers, disc locks, alarm systems) can reduce comprehensive premiums and make recovery more likely. Ask about discounts for security equipment when getting your quote.
Agreed value for heavily customized builds
If you have invested significantly in a Harley, standard ACV settlement will not make you whole. A bike with $15,000 in parts on top of a $20,000 base value has $35,000 in replacement cost. An ACV policy may pay you book value on the base model only, leaving the modification investment unrecovered.
Agreed value policies from Markel or through specialty programs lock in the full insured value at policy inception. That number is what you receive if the bike is totaled.
Vintage and collector Harleys
Pre-Evo Harleys, Knuckleheads, Panheads, Shovelheads, and early Sportsters have genuine collector value. Hagerty and Markel both write vintage Harleys well, with agreed value and flexible mileage programs designed for bikes that go to shows more than commutes.
Cooper's take
The most common coverage gap I see on Harleys is the CP&E situation. Someone puts $12,000 into a Road Glide over three years, exhaust, stage kit, audio, custom paint, and never updates their accessories limit. The default policy is still sitting at $3,000. They think they are covered. They are not.
Take an hour to inventory what you have put into the bike. Write down what it cost. Then make sure that number is reflected in your coverage limit. It is a five-minute conversation once we are talking, and it makes a real difference if the bike is ever totaled or stolen.

Frequently asked questions
Why do Harleys need custom parts and equipment coverage?
Most Harley-Davidson motorcycles leave the factory and then get modified. Aftermarket exhaust systems, seats, handlebars, lighting, audio, and chrome can add $3,000 to $20,000 or more to the bike's value. Standard policies have low default limits for accessories, often $3,000. If your bike has significantly more than that in mods, you need higher CP&E limits or a specialty policy.
Are Street Glides and Road Glides a high theft risk in NC?
Yes. Touring-class Harleys are among the most stolen motorcycles nationally. Street Glides and Road Glides are especially targeted because they are high-value and have a liquid secondary market for parts. Comprehensive coverage is essential, and security systems can reduce premiums.
What is agreed value and when does it matter for a Harley?
Agreed value means you and the insurer agree on the bike's value at policy inception. If the bike is totaled, you receive that full amount without depreciation or negotiation. For heavily customized Harleys where the build value exceeds book value, agreed value is the only approach that makes you whole.
Can I insure a vintage or collector Harley in NC?
Yes. Vintage and collector Harleys, including pre-Evo iron engines, Knuckleheads, Panheads, and Shovelheads, are well-served by Hagerty and Markel. These specialty carriers understand the collector market and offer agreed value coverage with mileage flexibility appropriate for show bikes and low-mileage riders.
Does the Pan America need different coverage than a touring Harley?
The Pan America is Harley's adventure touring entry, and its coverage profile is similar to other ADV bikes. It is likely to see more varied terrain and conditions than a touring model. Standard motorcycle coverage applies, but consider comprehensive and MedPay given the off-pavement exposure.
