What drone insurance covers

A commercial drone policy typically includes several components:

  • Liability, third-party injury and property damage from drone incidents. The most critical coverage for commercial operators.
  • Hull (physical damage), covers the drone itself if crashed, damaged, or lost.
  • Payload coverage, sensors, cameras, and other equipment mounted on the drone.
  • Ground equipment, controllers, chargers, cases, and transport equipment.
  • Non-owned drone coverage, liability when operating a drone you don't own.

Standard exclusions include intentional acts, flying in restricted airspace, and operating outside your FAA certification scope. Geographic restrictions vary by carrier.

Hobbyist vs. commercial coverage

Hobbyists flying recreationally under FAA rules may have limited coverage through AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics) membership. This is not a substitute for commercial coverage if you are earning money from drone operations.

FAA Part 107 certification establishes you as a commercial operator. Once you are earning income from drone flights, a dedicated commercial drone policy is the appropriate solution.

Cooper's take

Drone insurance is a newer but genuinely important coverage for commercial operators. Liability is the key: a drone crashing into a person, a vehicle, or a structure can produce a significant claim. The FAA Part 107 commercial certification establishes you as a professional operator, and carrying appropriate insurance is part of operating professionally.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need insurance for my commercial drone operation in NC?

Yes. If you operate drones commercially under FAA Part 107, clients and venues will typically require proof of liability insurance. Even without a client requirement, the liability exposure from a drone incident is real, commercial liability coverage is essential.

Does homeowner's insurance cover my drone in NC?

Personal drone use may have some coverage under homeowner's liability, but standard policies have strict limits and typically exclude commercial drone operations. A standalone drone policy is appropriate for commercial operators.

What is hull coverage for drones?

Hull coverage (physical damage) covers your drone if it is damaged, crashed, or lost, similar to how collision and comprehensive cover your car. It can be set at agreed value (replacement cost) or actual cash value for the equipment.

What liability limits do commercial drone operators need in NC?

Many clients and venues require a minimum of $1 million in liability coverage. Operators working in populated areas, near infrastructure, or on high-value projects may need higher limits. An independent agent can help set appropriate limits.
