Most NC insurance buyers encounter three distribution models without realizing there are meaningful differences between them.
Captive agents work for one carrier. State Farm, Allstate, Farmers, and GEICO all operate through captive agent networks in NC. These agents know their company's products well, but when their carrier raises rates or declines to write your risk, they have no alternative to offer you.
Independent agents represent multiple carriers, often 10 to 25 or more. IronHaven works with 25+ carriers. When one carrier's rates move, there are alternatives. When a carrier non-renews a policy, the independent agent can often place coverage elsewhere without the client having to start over from scratch.
Direct writers are a third model, carriers like GEICO (direct), Lemonade, and others that sell entirely without agents. No agent compensation, but also no advocate on your side when a claim arises or coverage questions come up.
How independent agents are paid
Independent agents earn a commission from the carrier when a policy is written and renewed. That commission is built into the carrier's pricing, it is not an added charge to you. You pay the same premium for the same policy whether you buy through an independent agent, a captive agent, or in many cases directly.
The practical effect: an independent agent's market access costs you nothing extra, but gives you the benefit of having someone shop across multiple carriers on your behalf.
When the independent advantage matters most
- ›Rate increases, when your captive carrier raises rates, you have one option. Your independent agent has 25+.
- ›Non-renewals, carriers periodically non-renew policies. An independent agent can often place you with a competing carrier before coverage lapses.
- ›Hard markets, when the NC insurance market tightens, independent agents with carrier relationships can access options that aren't available directly.
- ›Complex risks, older homes, high-value properties, dogs, trampolines, and pools all require carriers with the right appetite. Independent agents find them.
- ›Claims advocacy, an independent agent represents you, not the carrier. That relationship matters when a claim is disputed.
Cooper's take
This is the question I get more than almost any other, why use an independent agent? The answer is simple: I work for you, not for a carrier. When State Farm's rates go up, a State Farm agent has one option for you. I have 25+. That math almost always works in your favor.

Frequently asked questions
What is a captive insurance agent?
A captive agent represents one insurance company exclusively, State Farm agents only sell State Farm, Allstate agents only sell Allstate. They know their carrier's products deeply but can only offer you one company's rates and options.
What is an independent insurance agent?
An independent agent represents multiple carriers, often 10, 20, or 25+ companies. They shop your coverage across their carrier network to find the best combination of price, coverage, and service for your specific situation. They work for you, not for a single carrier.
Is an independent agent more expensive?
No. Independent agents are typically compensated by commission from the carrier, the same way captive agents are. You pay the same premium whether you buy through an independent agent or a captive agent, but the independent agent shopped multiple carriers to get you that price.
When does using a captive agent make sense?
If you have a long-standing relationship with a captive carrier that has served you well and their rates remain competitive, staying is reasonable. The advantage of the independent channel becomes most apparent when your current carrier raises rates, non-renews, or your situation changes, the independent agent already has access to alternatives.
