Where your student lives determines a lot about their insurance situation:
- Dorm, most parents' homeowner's policies extend personal property coverage to a student living on campus, but typically capped at 10% of Coverage C (personal property limit). On a $100k policy, that's $10k, which may be sufficient for a dorm room.
- Off-campus apartment, the parents' policy generally does NOT cover a student living off-campus. The student needs their own renters policy.
- Renters insurance cost, typically $10-$20/month. One of the best coverage values available.
Auto insurance for NC college students
If your student drives a car registered to the parents and lives at the same address, they're typically covered under the parents' policy as a household member. Things get more complicated when the student:
- Moves to a different state (may need to be added separately or get own policy)
- Establishes a permanent address away from home
- Purchases their own vehicle
NC also offers a good-student discount (typically 10-20%) for full-time students with a B average or better. Make sure your agent is applying it.
Other coverages worth knowing about
- Health insurance, under the ACA, young adults can stay on parents' health insurance until age 26.
- Electronics and valuables, expensive laptops, cameras, and instruments may exceed standard renters policy sublimits. A scheduled personal articles endorsement provides broader coverage.
- Bicycle theft, often covered under renters insurance, but sublimits and off-premises coverage vary by carrier.
- Life insurance, minimal need for most students unless they have co-signed student loans. If parents co-signed, a small term policy on the student may make sense.
Cooper's take
College students are often the most underinsured demographic in NC. They assume their parents' policies cover everything. Sometimes they do, and sometimes there are gaps that become very expensive. The good news is that the right coverage for a college student is usually inexpensive and straightforward to put in place.

Frequently asked questions
Are college students covered under their parents' home insurance in NC?
Often partially. A college student living in a dorm may have some coverage under their parents' homeowner's policy for personal property, but usually limited to 10% of the parents' Coverage C. A student in an off-campus apartment is typically not covered. Renters insurance for the off-campus student is the right answer.
Does a college student need their own auto insurance in NC?
If the student is driving a car registered to the parents and listed on the parents' auto policy, they may be covered as a household member. Once they move to a different state or establish a permanent address other than the parents' home, they may need to be added to the NC policy explicitly or get their own. The specifics depend on the carrier.
How much does renters insurance cost for a NC college student?
Very little. A basic renters policy for an off-campus apartment can cost $10-$20 per month, covering personal property, liability, and additional living expenses. It's one of the most affordable and underutilized coverages available to young adults.
Does renters insurance cover a laptop or phone if stolen from a college campus?
Standard renters insurance covers personal property stolen from the rental unit and often covers theft away from home up to a sublimit. Electronics sublimits vary. For expensive laptops or phones, a scheduled personal articles endorsement may provide better coverage.
