Jet skis and WaveRunners are everywhere on NC's waters in summer. Lake Norman, Jordan Lake, the Outer Banks, the Brunswick Islands, personal watercraft are a fixture at every popular water destination in the state.
Common models include:
- ·Yamaha WaveRunner: VX series (entry), FX Cruiser, FX Limited SVHO (high-performance)
- ·Sea-Doo: GTI series (recreational), GTX, RXT, RXP-X (performance), Spark (affordable)
- ·Kawasaki Jet Ski: Ultra 310 and Ultra 160 series
Why homeowners insurance is not enough
Many jet ski owners believe their homeowners policy covers their personal watercraft. This is almost always wrong in a meaningful way. Common homeowners policy positions on PWC:
- ·Some home policies provide a small liability limit for watercraft under 26 horsepower, a modern jet ski has 100 to 310 horsepower
- ·Physical damage to the jet ski itself is typically not covered under a home policy
- ·Medical payments for your passengers are not covered under a home policy in a watercraft incident
A standalone PWC policy addresses all of this with appropriate coverage at an affordable premium.
Liability is the most important coverage
A jet ski accident that seriously injures another person, a swimmer, a tuber, a paddleboarder, can generate a liability claim in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. At 50 mph, the mass and velocity of a personal watercraft in a collision is significant. NC's lakes and coastal waterways are busy in summer.
Recommended liability limits for personal watercraft:
- ·Minimum: $100,000 per occurrence
- ·Better: $300,000 per occurrence
- ·Best: $300,000 plus an umbrella policy for additional protection
Hull and physical damage coverage
A new Yamaha FX Limited SVHO or Sea-Doo RXP-X costs $18,000 to $20,000. Comprehensive and collision coverage protects against theft, weather damage, collision with a submerged object, and similar losses. For new or high-value units, agreed value ensures you receive the full insured amount on a total loss without depreciation.
Cooper's take
Jet ski coverage is one of the easiest conversations I have. The policies are straightforward, the premiums are low, and the liability exposure is real enough that almost everyone understands why they need it once we talk through it.
The homeowners policy assumption is the main thing to correct. I hear it frequently, "I think it's on my home policy." Pull the policy and check. The coverage is either not there or is so limited that it does not matter for a modern jet ski. A dedicated PWC policy costs a few hundred dollars per year and actually covers what you need covered.

Frequently asked questions
Does my homeowners insurance cover my jet ski?
Most homeowners policies include minimal or no coverage for personal watercraft. Some provide a very small liability limit for small, low-horsepower watercraft, but most jet skis and WaveRunners exceed those limits. A separate PWC policy is almost always necessary for adequate coverage. Do not assume your home policy handles it.
Why is liability coverage so important for jet ski riders?
A jet ski collision with a swimmer or another vessel can cause catastrophic injury. At 40 to 70 mph, the impact of a personal watercraft is severe. The liability exposure from a serious accident can be very large. Carrying robust liability limits, at least $100,000 and ideally $300,000 or more, is essential for any PWC operator.
What is the difference between jet ski insurance and boat insurance?
Personal watercraft insurance is a category within marine insurance. It is similar to boat insurance but tailored to the size, speed, and use patterns of jet skis and WaveRunners. Coverage types are similar: hull, liability, medical payments, uninsured boater. The premiums are generally lower than full-size boat policies given the lower hull values.
Does agreed value matter for a jet ski?
For high-performance or new stand-up jet skis and premium three-seater models, agreed value is worth considering. A current-year Yamaha FX Limited SVHO or Sea-Doo RXP-X can be $18,000 to $20,000 or more. An ACV policy on a recent high-value PWC may not fully cover replacement. Ask about agreed value if your unit is new or high-performance.
Is jet ski insurance required in North Carolina?
NC does not legally require insurance to operate a personal watercraft, but marinas and boat ramps often require proof of liability insurance for launch access. Given the liability exposure of operating a jet ski, carrying at least liability coverage is strongly recommended regardless of any legal requirement.
