Pontoon boats are the most common recreational boat on North Carolina's lakes. Their versatility, family cruising, tubing, sandbar entertaining, makes them the default choice for lake homeowners and frequent summer boaters.
NC's primary pontoon lakes include Lake Norman (Iredell/Mecklenburg), Jordan Lake (Chatham/Wake), Kerr Lake (Vance), Falls Lake (Wake), and Lake Gaston (Warren/Vance). Each has its own marina ecosystem and boating patterns.
Standard pontoon vs. tri-toon: coverage differences
The pontoon market has bifurcated significantly. Standard two-tube pontoons in the $25,000 to $60,000 range are written by most marine carriers without issue. Tri-toons and performance pontoons are a different conversation:
- ·Performance tri-toons with 300+ horsepower can exceed 50 mph and are priced at $80,000 to $150,000 or more
- ·Agreed value is appropriate at these price points, ACV on a $120,000 tri-toon will not reflect replacement cost
- ·Higher horsepower may affect liability rates and some carriers' appetite to write the boat
Common pontoon boat claims
Understanding common losses helps you make sure your coverage addresses them:
- ·Dock collisions: Wind or wake-induced contact with your own or a neighbor's dock
- ·Log and submerged object strikes: Common on NC lakes, especially after rainfall raises water levels
- ·Weather damage: Hailstorms and summer thunderstorms can damage upholstery and electronics
- ·Liability to others: Wake damage to smaller boats, swimmer strikes at busy public ramps
- ·Trailer accidents: Boat and trailer damage during transport
What to make sure your policy covers
- ·Hull value reflects current replacement cost including all add-ons
- ·Liability limits adequate for the waterway you use ($100,000 minimum, $300,000+ for busy lakes)
- ·Medical payments for passengers on board
- ·Uninsured boater coverage for collisions with uninsured operators
- ·Towing coverage appropriate for the lake's size
- ·Trailer specified and covered
Cooper's take
Pontoon boat coverage is a case where the homeowners policy assumption is almost always wrong. I have had people tell me their home policy covers the boat, and when we pull the policy, the limit is $1,500 or $2,500, enough to cover a canoe, not a $50,000 pontoon.
A standalone marine policy for a standard pontoon typically runs $300 to $600 per year. For a tri-toon, more. Either way, the cost of the right policy is trivial compared to what you have invested in the boat. Get it right.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need separate insurance for a pontoon boat or can it go on my home policy?
Homeowners policies provide very limited boat coverage, typically a few thousand dollars in physical damage and minimal liability. A pontoon boat worth $30,000 to $100,000 needs a standalone marine policy. Boat-specific policies provide hull coverage at full value, adequate liability, and coverage types homeowners policies do not include.
Is a tri-toon insured differently than a standard pontoon?
Tri-toons and performance pontoons are insured under the same marine policy category but at higher values. A high-performance tri-toon priced at $80,000 to $150,000 should be on an agreed value policy rather than ACV to ensure full replacement cost at claim time. Carriers treat the performance capability similarly to a powerboat of comparable speed.
What does a pontoon boat policy cover on Lake Norman?
A standard marine policy on Lake Norman covers hull damage (collision with a dock, log strike, weather damage), liability if you damage another vessel or injure someone, medical payments for passengers, and personal property on board. Towing coverage is also worth adding given the size of the lake. Make sure the policy specifies inland waterway coverage.
Is pontoon boat furniture and upholstery covered?
Pontoon upholstery, seating, and furniture are generally included in the hull coverage as part of the boat's value. If you have added premium aftermarket seating or accessories, make sure your hull value reflects those additions. Specialty items like wakeboard towers or premium sound systems may need to be specifically scheduled.
Does the trailer need its own coverage?
Trailer coverage should be confirmed specifically with your carrier. Some marine policies include the trailer in the hull coverage, others require it to be listed separately or covered under your auto policy. A pontoon trailer can be worth $3,000 to $8,000 and should not be an afterthought.
