Jewelry insurance in North Carolina

Your homeowners policy caps jewelry theft coverage at $1,500. If your ring, watch, or collection is worth more than that, and it almost certainly is, you need a scheduled floater. Here is how it works.

Cooper's take

The engagement ring is the most common thing people think they are insuring and are not. The homeowners policy $1,500 sublimit is one of the most misunderstood limitations in insurance. Someone buys a $22,000 ring, assumes it is covered under the homeowners policy, and does not find out differently until a stone falls out or the ring disappears.

Scheduling a piece of jewelry takes about 10 minutes and an appraisal. The annual cost is usually a rounding error compared to what the piece is worth. I add scheduled floaters to policies constantly, it is one of the easiest conversations in insurance.

Frequently asked questions

Does homeowners insurance cover jewelry in North Carolina?

Standard NC homeowners policies cover jewelry, but with a sublimit, typically $1,500 total for theft. If your engagement ring, watch collection, or inherited pieces are worth more than $1,500 (and they almost certainly are), the standard policy leaves most of their value unprotected. A scheduled personal articles floater or jewelry floater schedules each piece by appraised value and covers it fully, for loss, theft, mysterious disappearance, and accidental damage.

What is a scheduled personal articles floater in NC?

A scheduled personal articles floater is a separate policy (or endorsement to your homeowners policy) that insures specific high-value items, jewelry, watches, art, cameras, musical instruments, sporting equipment, at their full appraised value. Each item is listed individually with its value. Coverage is typically all-risk, meaning it covers loss, theft, damage, and mysterious disappearance worldwide. Unlike standard personal property coverage, there is usually no deductible on scheduled items.

How much does jewelry insurance cost in North Carolina?

Jewelry insurance in NC typically costs $1 to $2 per $100 of insured value annually. A $15,000 engagement ring would cost approximately $150 to $300 per year to schedule. The rate depends on the carrier, the type of item, where it is stored, and whether you have a home safe. Some carriers offer better rates for items stored in a bank safe deposit box when not being worn.

Do I need an appraisal to insure jewelry in NC?

Most carriers require a professional jewelry appraisal dated within the past three to five years to schedule a piece above a certain value threshold (typically $5,000 to $10,000). For lower-value items, a purchase receipt or sales receipt is often acceptable. Keep your appraisals updated, jewelry values, particularly diamonds, fluctuate with market conditions and an outdated appraisal can leave you underinsured at claim time.

What happens if my NC jewelry insurance claim is for mysterious disappearance?

Mysterious disappearance, you took the ring off somewhere, and when you looked for it, it was gone, is one of the most common jewelry claims and one of the most important reasons to schedule jewelry rather than rely on a standard homeowners policy. Standard policies typically exclude mysterious disappearance. A scheduled personal articles floater explicitly covers it. This single coverage difference is often the deciding factor in whether a claim is paid or denied.
