The most common question in life insurance

Should I buy term or whole life? The answer depends entirely on what you're trying to accomplish. Both are legitimate products. Neither is universally right.

Term life insurance

Term life is pure death benefit coverage for a defined period, 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 years. If you die during the term, the beneficiary receives the death benefit. If the term ends and you're alive, the policy expires with no remaining value.

  • Much cheaper than whole life for the same death benefit amount
  • Best for income replacement, mortgage protection, and covering temporary needs like raising children
  • A healthy 35-year-old NC male might pay $40-$60/month for a $500,000 20-year term policy
  • Simple structure: premiums in, death benefit out if needed

Whole life insurance

Whole life is permanent coverage that doesn't expire. Premiums are fixed for life. The policy builds cash value over time at a guaranteed rate, which can be borrowed against or surrendered.

  • More expensive, a comparable whole life policy to that $500K example could cost $400-$600/month
  • Best for permanent needs: estate planning, final expenses, business succession
  • Cash value grows at a guaranteed rate, historically 1-4%
  • Coverage never lapses as long as premiums are paid

A pitch to watch out for

Some agents present whole life as an investment vehicle, emphasizing the cash value growth. In reality, the returns are modest compared to investing the premium difference in a diversified portfolio. "Buy term and invest the difference" is a legitimate strategy for most people. Whole life cash value is better described as a guaranteed savings component than an investment.

When whole life actually makes sense

  • High-net-worth individuals using it for estate tax planning
  • Business owners funding buy-sell agreements
  • People who can't qualify for term due to health conditions and need permanent coverage
  • Those who've maxed other tax-advantaged accounts and want guaranteed growth

Universal life is a variation of whole life with flexible premiums. It's more complex and best explained in a direct conversation with a licensed agent.

Cooper's take

For most NC families, young parents, homeowners, income earners with dependents, term life is the right answer. It's affordable, the coverage amount can be substantial, and it covers the years when protection matters most. The premium difference between a term and whole life policy is significant, and for most households, putting that difference to work elsewhere makes more financial sense. Whole life has its place, but the sales pitch for it often oversells the investment angle.

Frequently asked questions

Is term life insurance a waste of money if I outlive the term?

No. You paid for income protection during your highest-risk years. If you died, your family would have been covered. It's insurance, not a savings account, the goal is to not need to use it.

Can I convert term life to whole life?

Many term policies include a conversion option that lets you convert to a permanent policy without a new medical exam, typically before a certain age or within the first few years. Check your policy's conversion provision.

What happens to whole life cash value when I die?

The death benefit is paid to the beneficiary. In most whole life policies, the insurer keeps the cash value separately, the beneficiary receives the face amount only. Some policies pay both; read the terms.

How much life insurance do I need in NC?

A common starting point is 10-12x your annual income, adjusted for your mortgage balance, debts, and number of dependents. A licensed agent can run a needs analysis specific to your situation.
