- ·Traditional Universal Life (UL): Flexible premium, interest-sensitive cash value. The interest crediting rate moves with market conditions. Can lapse if underfunded or if rates fall below projections. Has a troubled history of unexpected lapses for older policyholders.
- ·Guaranteed Universal Life (GUL): Permanent death benefit guaranteed to a specific age (90, 95, 100, or 121) with minimal cash value and fixed premium. The most cost-efficient permanent death benefit available. The guarantee holds regardless of interest rates.
- ·Variable Universal Life (VUL): Premium flexibility with cash value invested in sub-accounts similar to mutual funds. Returns depend on investment performance. Suitable for investors who want to actively manage the investment component and can accept downside risk.
Why GUL is often the right answer for permanent coverage
When someone wants lifelong coverage, a permanent death benefit that will be there whenever they die, GUL delivers that at a far lower cost than whole life. The trade-off is minimal cash value accumulation. For clients who want the death benefit guarantee and are investing elsewhere for growth, GUL is the efficient choice.
Example: A 55-year-old who wants $500,000 of permanent coverage to age 100 can often get a GUL for $300 to $500 per month. The same coverage in whole life might cost $1,500 to $2,000 per month. If cash value accumulation is not the goal, the GUL delivers the same death benefit outcome at a fraction of the cost.
The traditional UL caution
Traditional universal life policies sold in the 1980s and 1990s were illustrated with interest crediting rates of 8% to 10%. When rates fell, the cash value eroded. Many policyholders received notices in their 60s and 70s that their policy was underfunded and would lapse unless they paid significantly more premium, exactly when they could least afford it.
Today's GUL products address this by separating the guarantee from interest rate performance. The no-lapse guarantee is contractual, not based on illustrated rate assumptions. This is a fundamental improvement over traditional UL.
Cooper's take
When a client wants permanent coverage and does not need cash value, GUL is almost always my recommendation over whole life. The death benefit guarantee is the same. The premium is substantially lower. For clients who do want growth potential inside the policy, IUL is typically the better fit than traditional UL.
I do see traditional UL policies in need of review from time to time, older policies where the client has not looked at the cash value position in years. If you own a traditional UL policy, it is worth a policy review to confirm the death benefit is still on track to age 100 or whenever you need it to be in force.

Frequently asked questions
What is Guaranteed Universal Life (GUL) insurance?
Guaranteed Universal Life (GUL) provides a permanent death benefit guaranteed to a specific age, typically 90, 95, 100, or 121, with a fixed premium and minimal cash value accumulation. It is the most cost-efficient way to obtain a lifelong death benefit. The focus is on the death benefit guarantee rather than cash value growth, making it significantly less expensive than whole life for the same coverage amount.
What is the difference between traditional UL and Guaranteed UL?
Traditional Universal Life is interest-sensitive, the cash value grows based on current interest rates. When rates are high, the policy performs well. When rates fall, the cash value may underperform, and some older traditional UL policies have lapsed because the cash value eroded below what was needed to sustain the death benefit. Guaranteed UL locks in the death benefit guarantee regardless of interest rates, providing certainty that traditional UL does not.
Who is universal life insurance right for?
GUL is well-suited for people who want a permanent death benefit but do not need significant cash value accumulation, estate planning, final expenses at a large face amount, or lifelong coverage past when term would expire. Traditional UL is less commonly recommended today because GUL and IUL generally outperform it for their respective use cases. Variable UL suits investors comfortable managing investment allocation within the policy.
Can universal life premiums be flexible?
Traditional universal life allows premium flexibility within limits, you can pay more or less than the target premium, subject to keeping the policy in force. GUL typically requires disciplined premium payments to maintain the guarantee, underpaying can void the no-lapse guarantee. Premium flexibility in traditional UL is both a feature and a risk, as underfunding has caused many policies to lapse unexpectedly.
What carriers write universal life insurance in NC?
GUL carriers in NC include Protective, Pacific Life, Lincoln Financial, Nationwide, and North American. Each has different guarantee ages, underwriting appetites, and premium structures. An independent agent can compare options across carriers for the same coverage, which often reveals meaningful price differences for the same guaranteed death benefit.
