Watch Collection Insurance
Watch collection insurance in North Carolina
Standard homeowners policies cap jewelry and watch theft coverage at $1,500–$2,500. A single Daytona or Nautilus is worth multiples of that. Scheduled coverage with agreed value is the only real protection.

Appraisal: keep values current
The secondary market for luxury watches moves quickly. Rolex references that sold at retail in 2019 are worth two to three times retail today. A general jewelry appraiser may not track specific reference values accurately, use a watch-specific appraiser who knows the secondary market.
Update appraisals every 2 to 3 years, or whenever you make a significant addition to the collection. An outdated appraisal can leave you collecting far less than the watch's current value at claim time.
Cooper's take
The watch market has become a significant alternative investment category, and the coverage gap is real. I have reviewed homeowners policies for clients with six-figure watch collections where the total theft coverage for all jewelry and watches was $2,500. That is not coverage, that is a deductible on a different policy.
Scheduling each piece individually takes a few minutes and a current appraisal. The annual premium relative to the collection value is modest, and it is the difference between a covered loss and a total loss.

Frequently asked questions
Does homeowners insurance cover my watch collection in North Carolina?
Standard NC homeowners policies cover jewelry and watches under the personal property sublimit, which is typically $1,500 to $2,500 for theft. A single Rolex Daytona is worth $20,000 to $40,000 or more. A Patek Nautilus or Audemars Piguet Royal Oak can exceed $100,000. The sublimit is nowhere near adequate for a serious watch collection.
What does a scheduled watch policy cover in NC?
A scheduled personal articles floater for watches covers each piece individually at its agreed value. Coverage is all-risk, theft, mysterious disappearance (the watch disappeared and you don't know how), accidental damage, and loss. There is typically no deductible on scheduled items. Coverage extends worldwide, which is important for collectors who wear watches while traveling.
How often should I get my watch collection appraised in NC?
Secondary market values for watches, particularly Rolex, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, and Richard Mille, move quickly. A Daytona appraised at $15,000 in 2018 may be worth $35,000 or more today. Update appraisals every 2 to 3 years, and use a watch-specific appraiser, a general jewelry appraiser may not track the secondary market values of specific references accurately.
Are watches covered while I'm traveling internationally?
Yes, scheduled personal property coverage typically extends worldwide. This is an important feature for collectors who wear watches while traveling. Rob and theft risk is elevated when traveling, particularly in tourist-heavy areas. Your scheduled coverage follows the watch wherever it goes.
What makes watches a high-theft-risk item to insure in NC?
Watches are uniquely theft-prone compared to most personal property: they are highly portable, immediately identifiable and resaleable, worn visibly in public, and concentrated value, a single watch on your wrist can be worth more than everything else in your home combined. Robbery (theft with force or threat) and burglary are the primary watch collection risks, and both are covered under a properly scheduled floater.
