The 1970 GSX Stage 1, the quickest Buick ever made

The 1970 Buick GSX Stage 1 was factory rated at 360 hp, but independent testing suggested closer to 400. It was faster in the quarter mile than most contemporary muscle cars, despite being a Buick. Only 678 GSX cars were produced in 1970.

The Stage 1 option on a GSX is the key value driver. Documentation of the Stage 1 package, VIN decoding, and original window sticker are what distinguish a $120,000 car from a $70,000 car.

Cooper's take

The GSX Stage 1 owner is often pleasantly surprised by how the specialty market values their car. Buick muscle is underappreciated generally, but not by the people who know these cars. As values converge with comparable GM muscle, the agreed value conversation becomes more and more important.

Frequently asked questions

Are Buick muscle cars undervalued compared to Chevrolet?

Generally yes. A 1970 GSX Stage 1 in comparable condition to a 1970 Chevelle SS 454 typically sells for less, despite comparable or superior performance. Many collectors view Buick muscle as undervalued, which makes documentation and agreed value especially important.

What makes a 1963-1965 Buick Riviera collectible?

The first three years of the Riviera are considered the design peak. The 1965 Riviera in particular, with its clean lines before the body grew larger, is among the most aesthetically praised American cars of the 1960s. Prices for excellent examples have risen steadily.

Can I insure a classic Buick through Hagerty?

Yes. Hagerty covers classic Buicks including Gran Sport, GSX, and Riviera models with agreed value. They have experience with GM A-body muscle across all brands.
