Travel trailers in North Carolina

Travel trailers are the most common RV type on NC campgrounds. They range from $10,000 pop-up campers that fold flat to $80,000 luxury hard-wall trailers with residential appliances. Popular models in NC include the Airstream Classic and Bambi, Grand Design Reflection, Oliver Legacy Elite, and Forest River Cherokee.

NC campground networks along the Blue Ridge Parkway, in the Smoky Mountains, and along the Outer Banks are among the most visited in the Southeast. Many NC travel trailer owners store their rigs locally and tow to destinations throughout the state and region.

What the auto policy covers and does not cover

This is the most common misconception in travel trailer insurance:

  • ·Covered by auto liability while towing: Bodily injury and property damage you cause to others. If you rear-end another vehicle while towing, your auto liability applies.
  • ·NOT covered by the auto policy: Physical damage to the trailer itself. If the trailer is in a collision, catches fire, is stolen, or damaged by hail, none of that is covered under your auto policy.
  • ·NOT covered by the auto policy: Personal belongings inside the trailer. Clothing, electronics, camping gear, all need coverage on the RV policy or your homeowners policy.

Airstream coverage considerations

Airstream travel trailers command a premium on the market and hold value better than most production trailers. They also present specific repair challenges. The riveted aluminum construction requires Airstream-certified technicians, a body shop that works on fiberglass trailers is not equipped for an Airstream repair.

Hail damage and parking lot impacts are the most common Airstream claims. The curved aluminum panels are expensive to replace correctly, and the limited repair network means longer wait times. For Airstream owners, agreed value coverage and awareness of the repair network in NC are both important discussions before a claim happens.

Seasonal use and storage coverage

Many NC travel trailer owners camp seasonally, spring through fall, and store the trailer during winter months. Most RV carriers offer storage or lay-up periods where liability and collision coverage can be reduced or suspended, lowering the seasonal premium.

Comprehensive coverage should remain active during storage. Hail, wind damage, fire, and theft are year-round risks regardless of whether the trailer is being used. Suspending comprehensive to save a few dollars during storage is not a risk worth taking.

Cooper's take

Travel trailer coverage is the one area where I most commonly find gaps. The auto policy covers the trailer while it is moving from a liability standpoint, and people interpret that to mean they are fully covered. Then a hailstorm damages the trailer at a campsite, and they discover they have no physical damage coverage on the trailer at all.

A standalone travel trailer policy is inexpensive relative to the value of the trailer. For a $40,000 trailer, comprehensive and collision coverage typically runs $300 to $600 per year. That is real protection for a significant asset.

Frequently asked questions

Does my auto insurance cover my travel trailer?

Your auto liability policy typically extends to a travel trailer while it is attached and being towed, covering bodily injury and property damage you cause to others. It does not cover physical damage to the trailer itself. The trailer needs its own comprehensive and collision coverage for fire, weather, theft, accident, and other losses.

Is my travel trailer covered during storage?

Comprehensive coverage on a standalone travel trailer policy applies during storage. Fire, theft, vandalism, hail, and weather damage are covered perils whether the trailer is at a campsite, in your driveway, or in a storage facility. If you store the trailer seasonally, comprehensive coverage continues to protect it during that period.

Does Airstream need special coverage compared to other travel trailers?

Airstream trailers have a distinctive aluminum construction that most body shops cannot correctly repair. Airstream-certified repair facilities are limited, and repair costs are higher than a comparable fiberglass trailer. Hail damage and parking lot impacts are common claims on Airstreams. For newer or higher-value Airstream units, agreed value coverage and awareness of repair network limitations are important.

Do I need year-round coverage on a travel trailer I only use seasonally?

Most RV insurers offer seasonal or storage-only rates that reduce the premium during months the trailer is not in use. Comprehensive coverage should remain active during storage, a hailstorm, fire, or theft in January is just as real as one in July. What typically changes in off-season coverage is the liability and collision component, which may be suspended when the trailer is not being towed.

What value basis is right for a travel trailer?

For standard production travel trailers under $40,000, ACV coverage is common and often adequate. For higher-value units, Airstream Classic, Grand Design Reflection, Oliver Legacy Elite, and for trailers with custom modifications, agreed value or stated value coverage better protects the investment. A $75,000 Airstream Classic subject to heavy ACV depreciation could receive a significantly reduced payout on a total loss.
