Cooper's take

GAP insurance fills the gap between what your car is worth (what your auto insurer pays) and what you still owe on your loan if the car is totaled. New cars depreciate quickly, you can be upside-down on a loan for the first few years.

If a total loss happens during that period, your insurer pays market value, your lender wants the loan balance, and the gap is your problem without GAP coverage. Dealers sell it (often overpriced), and your insurer may offer it at a fraction of the cost. This is one of those conversations worth having before you walk into the finance office.

Frequently asked questions

What is GAP insurance in NC?

GAP (Guaranteed Asset Protection) insurance covers the difference between what your auto insurer pays on a total loss (the vehicle's actual cash value) and the remaining balance on your car loan or lease. Without GAP, you may owe more to the lender than you receive from the insurance claim.

When does GAP insurance make sense in NC?

When you finance a new vehicle with a small down payment, when you have a long loan term (60 to 84 months), when you roll negative equity from a previous vehicle into a new loan, or when you lease a vehicle. GAP is most valuable in the first two to three years of ownership when depreciation is steepest.

Should I buy GAP insurance from the dealer or my insurance company in NC?

Your auto insurance company is usually significantly less expensive than the dealer. Dealer GAP is often financed into the loan (so you pay interest on it) and can cost $600 to $900 or more. Insurance company GAP endorsements typically cost $20 to $40 per year. Ask your agent before you get to the dealer's finance office.

Does GAP insurance pay off my entire loan if my car is totaled in NC?

GAP covers the difference between the ACV settlement and your loan balance. It does not cover past-due payments, extended warranties rolled into the loan, or other fees added to the loan balance beyond the original vehicle price. Review what your specific GAP policy covers.
