Liability-only coverage is the right call in specific situations, an older vehicle whose market value is low relative to the cost of collision and comprehensive coverage. But I see people drop collision and comprehensive on vehicles that still have real value, or carry liability-only because they think it's all they need. The decision deserves actual math, not a gut call.

Frequently asked questions
What is liability-only auto insurance in NC?
Liability-only means you carry only the legally required coverages: bodily injury liability, property damage liability, and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. You do not carry collision (covers your car if you crash) or comprehensive (covers theft, weather, animal strikes). If your car is damaged, you pay out of pocket.
When does liability-only make sense in NC?
When the annual cost of collision and comprehensive exceeds roughly 10% of your vehicle's actual cash value. For a $4,000 car with $600/year in collision and comprehensive, the math may favor dropping it. For a $15,000 car, dropping it means absorbing a potentially large loss.
Is liability-only ever required or prohibited in NC?
Lenders require collision and comprehensive on financed or leased vehicles, liability-only is not an option until you own the car outright. NC law only requires liability and UM/UIM coverage, so liability-only is legal for vehicles you own free and clear.
What is the risk of driving liability-only in NC?
If you're in an accident that's your fault, or if your car is stolen or damaged by weather, you receive nothing for your vehicle. The risk is absorbing the full cost of replacement or repair. For low-value vehicles, that risk is manageable. For higher-value ones, it's a significant financial exposure.
