Two types of event insurance coverage

Wedding and event insurance is structured around two distinct needs. Most people need at least one, and often both.

  • 1.Cancellation and postponement coverage: Reimburses non-refundable deposits and event costs if the wedding must be cancelled or postponed due to a covered reason, vendor failure, venue closure, sudden illness, severe weather, or military deployment. Does not cover cold feet or a change of heart.
  • 2.Event liability coverage: Covers bodily injury or property damage claims arising from the event. A guest trips and is injured. A venue's property is damaged. This is often required by the venue as a condition of the contract.

When to buy wedding insurance in NC

The right time to buy is as soon as deposits are paid. Cancellation coverage protects money already committed to vendors and venues. Waiting until the week before the wedding means you cannot recover deposits already paid if something goes wrong before the policy is in place.

Most NC wedding venues have vendor contracts that specifically require event liability coverage. Reading the venue contract carefully will tell you the minimum limits required.

Liquor liability and alcohol at events

Events with alcohol carry additional liability. If a guest over-consumes and causes an accident after leaving your event, you may face a claim. Standard event liability policies cover host liquor liability as long as alcohol is not sold (i.e., no cash bar where you profit from sales). A liquor liability endorsement can extend this coverage.

Homeowner's insurance may provide some host liquor liability protection for events at your home, but the limits and conditions differ from a dedicated event policy. For a large wedding at home, a separate event policy is the cleaner solution.

Events beyond weddings

Event insurance is not limited to weddings. The same coverage structure applies to:

  • Birthday milestone parties
  • Anniversary celebrations
  • Graduation parties
  • Corporate and nonprofit events
  • Fundraisers and galas
  • Rehearsal dinners and engagement parties

Policies can be structured for a single-day event or a multi-day affair.

Cooper's take

Wedding insurance is the coverage people don't think they need until they need it. A venue fire, a vendor no-show, a weather cancellation, these events can cost couples tens of thousands of dollars that standard homeowner's insurance won't cover. It's one of the most affordable specialty coverages available, and one of the most underutilized.

Frequently asked questions

What does wedding insurance cover in NC?

Wedding insurance typically offers two types of coverage: event cancellation/postponement coverage (reimburses non-refundable deposits and costs if the wedding is cancelled or postponed due to covered reasons like vendor failure, weather, or venue closure) and wedding liability coverage (protects against bodily injury or property damage claims at the event).

How much does wedding insurance cost in NC?

Costs vary based on coverage limits and event size. Liability-only policies can start around $75-$150 for a basic event. Cancellation coverage adds more, depending on the insured wedding budget. It is very inexpensive relative to the average NC wedding cost.

Does homeowner's insurance cover a wedding at my home in NC?

Standard homeowner's insurance provides some liability protection for an event at your home, but it typically doesn't cover cancellation costs, vendor failure, or the elevated liability of a large event with alcohol. A dedicated event policy provides more appropriate coverage.

What events beyond weddings can be insured in NC?

Event insurance covers a wide range of gatherings: birthday parties, anniversaries, graduation parties, corporate events, fundraisers, and other special occasions. Policies can be tailored to the event type and size.
